    Power & energy

    Power Cost, Reliability and Interconnection

Power is the binding constraint on most large industrial and data center projects. Each indicator below is shown with its publishing organization, dataset and vintage. Reliability is reported both with and without major event days, because storm-driven outages and day-to-day reliability are different questions for a site decision.

Price and reliability indicators are state-level series using Ohio, the state of the metro's first principal city; EIA does not publish them at metropolitan statistical area level. Serving utilities and market footprint are specific to the Columbus metro. Indicators reading "Not available" have not yet been ingested from the registered source and are never estimated.

Generation queue is not load interconnection

Generation interconnection and load interconnection are different processes. Berkeley Lab's Queued Up data tracks power plants seeking to connect to the transmission grid — as of the end of 2025, over 2,060 GW were active in those queues, and the median project built in 2025 took more than five years from request to commercial operation. A manufacturing plant or data center instead needs a load connection, governed by the serving utility's tariff and interconnection process. Timelines for load connections are not captured in the queue data and must be confirmed with the utility directly.

Queue figures: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Queued Up, 2026 edition (Generator interconnection queue capacity and duration, through year-end 2025).
